Other things

There are times in your life when "other things" keep you from doing what you think you want to do. I have been so blessed with the harvest this year. My family members have sent many bags containing squash, okra, zucchini, and tomatoes to us. That is not all, we  have had so much rain this spring that there are bumper crops of  blackberries, plums, peaches, grapes and pears. I have never canned or frozen so much food before. Yesterday alone I canned 19 quarts and 2 pints of peaches (just from 2 trees and there are many more). There will be plenty to freeze and make preserves out of too. Many people have even given me their jars. More than providing food, it has provided and opportunity to save money, and  learning opportunities for  my kids.  Growing, picking, canning,  and/ or freezing isn't something most folks learn, there is an art to it all.
My oldest helped skin the peaches yesterday (after they were scalded) and felt real proud of himself, and so he should have. It was an immense help to me! After it was all done and he shared how he helped my youngest decided it would have been fun to have helped too.

Opportunities like this one are usually rare but for some reason my youngest son is always seeing some great feats of creation. Here he is with a butterfly that he fed as a caterpillar in a jar. He is so smart he knew that this monarch could only eat milkweed as a caterpillar and he set this sock over the jar so he could breath. We have another chrysalis in a jar and I noticed that the top of it has a gold band. It is sparkly like drops of real gold. You can tell he was really proud of his butterfly when it was transformed.
I have a great Fourth of July story to share but I will save that for another post. It is such an amazing story it needs its own room.

Until then, I am content to do whatever task comes my way, sometimes we just have to "do the work".
